A young girl was attacked by a 55-pound rabid beaver while swimming in a lake in Gainesville, Georgia, local news outlets reported. The incident, which took place 50 miles northeast of Atlanta at Lake Lanier, happened at 4pm. Hall County Animal Control said the girl was bit in the leg by a beaver while swimming on private property. Her father killed the animal which authorities classified as “just an otherwise angry beaver” as there was no sign of kits nearby. Don McGowan of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources told WSB-TV that it was described as “the biggest beaver ever seen." It was confirmed that the beaver had rabies, which McGowan said causes them to “act crazy." The girl was taken to a nearby hospital while county officials urged animal owners to ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies. State wildlife biologists said beaver attacks are rare, with the last incident they remember in Lake Lanier dating back to 2010.
